What does it mean to you to “Go Against The Grain”?
Having conviction in your thoughts and believing that your hard work will take you far no matter what conventional wisdom says.

What made you decide to pursue a career in this industry?
From a young age, I have always wanted to be a storyteller because the world will always need them. Inspired by my parents’ quest to find freedom in America, I wanted to be able to give people who don’t have a voice, a chance to speak and be heard. In broadcast journalism we have plenty of hard days, but when my story makes a difference such as exposing a wrong doing or being able to help someone in a tough situation, I know I’m doing what I’m supposed to. In addition to working as a TV Journalist, I love being able to create and write on my blog colorandchic.com. It’s place where readers can find inspiration for fashion and living an elevated lifestyle.

What have been some of the challenges you faced/lessons you learned as an Asian American in this field?
Asian-American women do not often pursue broadcast journalism, so I am a minority in that aspect. I have found nothing replaces the importance of good results, which means putting in the hard work everyday. I always dedicate myself to be a better reporter and anchor, write better stories and show viewers why they should care about what they are seeing. My work speaks for itself and that’s what led to me where I am today.

What do you feel is your biggest accomplishment and why?
I have always had respect for our nation’s military and admire the U.S. Navy Blue Angels for their service, showmanship and class. A few months after moving to Norfolk, I was chosen to fly in an F/A 18 Hornet with the Blue Angels as a reporter with WTKR New 3! It was easily the best day of my life. Blue Angels don’t fly with a g-suit, so your body has to be trained to handle all the g-forces. I was able to handle 7.1 G’s, 360s and more in the air. It certainly made me appreciate what our incredible pilots are capable of. After my story aired, a few parents reached out to me saying how their sons and daughters saw my story and now want to be pilots. Nothing could make me happier.

What’s up next?
What isn’t?! I am still learning and growing as a reporter and anchor and look forward to one day reporting for a national news network. I would also love to see how far my blog can take me. It’s heartwarming when my readers tell me how beautiful they feel in their clothes or how they have made a positive change in their lifestyle because of me. The best is yet to come.
